A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting a woman and child by the river, from his series of the Six Jewel Rivers.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu belongs to his series depicting the Six Jewel Rivers, a classical theme in Japanese poetry and art. The composition features a woman and a child walking along a riverbank, with plovers flying overhead. Harunobu, a pioneer of the nishiki-e (brocade print) technique, utilised multiple woodblocks to achieve a refined colour palette, moving away from the limited two or three-colour prints common in earlier decades.
The figures are rendered with the slender, graceful proportions characteristic of Harunobu's work. The woman wears a kimono with a striped obi, while the child is dressed in a patterned garment. The background is stylised, with the river represented by flowing, rhythmic lines that suggest movement without attempting realistic depth. The inclusion of a poem in the upper left corner connects the visual imagery to the literary tradition of the Six Jewel Rivers, which were celebrated for their beauty and associations with specific locations in Japan.
Harunobu's approach to space is flattened, focusing on the decorative arrangement of the figures against the muted, earthy tones of the riverbank. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo period printmakers, who balanced calligraphic line work with carefully applied colour fields. This work reflects the aesthetic values of the mid-eighteenth century, where the depiction of daily life was often filtered through poetic and historical references. The plovers, or chidori, serve as a visual shorthand for the specific river location, reinforcing the thematic unity of the series. The print remains a clear example of the transition toward full-colour printing in the Ukiyo-e tradition, showing the artist's ability to integrate text and image into a cohesive design.
