A quiet genre scene by Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, depicting a mother teaching her daughter to sew in a calm, domestic interior.
Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin produced this work, often titled 'La Mère laborieuse', in 1740. It depicts a quiet domestic scene where a mother instructs her daughter in needlework. The composition focuses on the concentration of the two figures, set within a dimly lit interior that emphasises the textures of their simple clothing and the wooden furniture. A small dog rests in the foreground, adding a sense of stillness to the room.
Chardin moved away from the ornate, mythological subjects common in the French art of his time. Instead, he turned his attention to the lives of the bourgeoisie and the working class. His approach to light and shadow creates a calm atmosphere, allowing the viewer to observe the mundane tasks of daily life with a sense of dignity. The muted palette of browns, greys, and soft whites directs the eye toward the interaction between the mother and child, rather than the surrounding environment.
This painting is part of a series that explores themes of education and moral instruction within the home. Chardin used a technique that involved building up layers of paint, which gives the surfaces a tactile quality. The work reflects the eighteenth-century interest in naturalism and the virtues of domestic industry. By capturing a fleeting moment of instruction, the artist provides a window into the social values of the period. The arrangement of the spinning wheel and the sewing basket suggests a space dedicated to productivity and order. This piece remains a primary example of how Chardin elevated ordinary activities to the status of fine art through his careful observation and technical skill.
