A 16th-century Mughal miniature by Farrukh Chela depicting the fable of the greedy dog, rendered in opaque watercolour and gold on paper.
This miniature painting, attributed to the Mughal court artist Farrukh Chela, illustrates the moral fable of the greedy dog. The composition is divided between a block of Persian nastaliq calligraphy and a detailed pictorial scene. The narrative depicts a dog standing on a rocky outcrop, clutching a bone in its mouth, while its reflection in the water below appears as a second dog, prompting the animal to snap at the water and lose its prize.
The architectural setting reflects the synthesis of Persian and Indian styles characteristic of the Akbar-period Mughal atelier. The multi-storied structures, rendered with a sense of verticality, feature arched balconies and crenellated rooftops. The artist employs a muted palette of earth tones, ochres, and soft greens, punctuated by the gold-flecked margins of the paper. The water is depicted with stylised, rhythmic lines, a common convention in 16th-century manuscript illumination to suggest movement and depth.
Farrukh Chela was active during the reign of Emperor Akbar and contributed to several major imperial manuscripts, including the Anvar-i Suhayli (Lights of Canopus), a collection of fables derived from the Panchatantra. This work demonstrates the technical precision required for courtly commissions, where the integration of text and image was essential for both didactic and aesthetic purposes. The figures of the dogs are rendered with careful attention to anatomy, while the surrounding environment provides a sense of place through its rock formations and foliage. The work is framed by a border of floral motifs, typical of the decorative standards applied to high-quality manuscript pages of the period.
