A detailed etching by Bartolommeo Biscaino depicting the biblical discovery of the infant Moses, rendered with fluid lines and expressive Baroque character.
This etching by the Genoese artist Bartolommeo Biscaino depicts the biblical narrative of the infant Moses discovered in the bulrushes. Biscaino, a pupil of Valerio Castello, was known for his technical proficiency in printmaking, particularly his ability to capture soft textures and light through varied hatching techniques. His career was brief, cut short by the plague in 1657, yet he left behind a body of work that demonstrates a clear mastery of the etching needle.
The composition focuses on the moment of discovery. A woman kneels at the water's edge, reaching toward the basket containing the child, while another figure behind her gestures toward the infant. The surrounding foliage is rendered with quick, energetic lines that suggest the wild, untamed nature of the riverbank. Biscaino employs a delicate balance of shadow and light to draw the viewer's eye to the central interaction between the figures and the child. The figures possess the soft, rounded forms characteristic of the Genoese Baroque style, reflecting the influence of his contemporaries and the broader artistic climate of seventeenth-century Italy.
This print captures the emotional weight of the scene through the physical gestures of the figures. The lines are fluid and expressive, avoiding rigid outlines in favour of a more painterly approach to etching. The background, though less detailed than the foreground, provides a sense of depth and atmosphere, grounding the narrative in a natural setting. As a museum-grade reproduction, this print preserves the fine detail of Biscaino's original plate, allowing for a close examination of his mark-making and compositional choices. It is an example of the high level of skill present in Italian printmaking during the mid-seventeenth century, offering a glimpse into the thematic interests of the period.
