A classical study of a seated female nude by André Derain, featuring a restrained palette and a focus on form against a deep green backdrop.
André Derain, a central figure in the development of early twentieth-century French art, produced this study of a female figure during his return to a more classical aesthetic. Following his earlier involvement with Fauvism, Derain moved towards a style defined by structural clarity and a restrained palette. This work demonstrates his interest in the traditional genre of the nude, treated here with a focus on form and volume rather than the expressive colour experiments of his youth.
The composition is straightforward. A seated woman occupies the centre of the frame, her gaze directed away from the viewer. The background consists of a heavy, draped green fabric that provides a vertical counterpoint to the soft curves of the figure. Derain employs a muted, earthy skin tone that contrasts with the cool, deep green of the curtain. The lighting is even, allowing the viewer to observe the anatomical modelling of the torso and shoulders.
Derain avoids excessive detail, preferring to simplify the features of the sitter to maintain the integrity of the overall shape. The brushwork is controlled, reflecting his shift away from the spontaneous, gestural application of paint seen in his earlier career. This piece captures a moment of quietude, typical of his post-war output. It is a study in balance, where the weight of the figure is anchored by the simple, dark backdrop. The work remains a clear example of the artist's engagement with the history of European painting, specifically his dialogue with the classical tradition of the studio nude.

Artist Biography
Andre Derain
He was born in Chatou in 1880 and had originally studied to become an engineer. He met Matisse in 1898 while attending painting classes under Eugene Carriere. The Fauvist paintings are explosions of unnatural colour: trees in orange, water in violet, shadows in green. They were among the most radical works produced in Paris at the turn of the century.
By 1908, Derain was already breaking with the style. He turned to Cezanne, then passed through a Cubist phase, and by the 1920s had arrived at a fully Neoclassical manner. The wildest of the Fauves became one of the most conservative painters in France. The conservative turn brought financial success and mainstream praise. During the Second World War, the Nazis approved of his Neoclassical work. After the war, he was unjustly accused of collaboration. His reputation never fully recovered. He died in 1954.
