A 1826 political satire by George Cruikshank critiquing the British banking crisis and the collapse of paper currency through the metaphor of rook shooting.
George Cruikshank produced this etching in 1826, a period marked by significant economic instability in Britain. The work functions as a biting critique of the banking crisis of 1825-1826, which saw numerous country banks fail and a subsequent collapse in public confidence regarding paper currency.
Cruikshank employs the visual metaphor of rook shooting to depict the predatory nature of the financial class. The bankers are shown as rooks, or crows, carrying promissory notes in their beaks, while the figures below represent the radical reformers and the public, armed with weapons and slogans demanding hard currency. The composition is dense with text, speech bubbles, and satirical verse, a common feature in the Georgian and early Victorian caricature tradition. The artist uses exaggerated physical features and chaotic action to convey the social unrest of the era.
This print captures the tension between the established financial order and the growing radical movements of the 1820s. The inclusion of doggerel verse at the bottom of the sheet provides a narrative framework for the visual chaos, linking the imagery to the contemporary discourse on the gold standard and the perceived greed of the banking sector. As a primary source, the work offers a window into the public perception of economic policy and the role of the press in shaping political opinion during the Regency period. The hand-coloured etching technique allows for a clear distinction between the various factions, with the bankers often associated with the paper money they issued, contrasted against the more grounded, if aggressive, figures of the populace.
