A detailed 1544 etching and engraving by Dirk Vellert depicting the biblical Great Flood with complex human figures and narrative depth.
Dirk Vellert, a prominent figure in the Antwerp school of the sixteenth century, produced this etching and engraving in 1544. The work depicts the biblical narrative of the Great Flood, a subject that allowed the artist to demonstrate his command of complex human anatomy and spatial organisation. The composition is crowded with figures, each reacting to the rising waters with varying degrees of desperation and resignation. To the left, the Ark is visible in the distance, providing a stark contrast to the chaos unfolding in the foreground.
Vellert employs a dense network of lines to define the forms of the figures and the turbulent environment. His technique reflects the influence of contemporary printmaking practices in the Low Countries, where the combination of etching and engraving allowed for a high degree of detail. The figures are rendered with a sense of muscularity and movement, typical of the Mannerist tendencies that began to permeate Northern European art during this period. The artist includes a variety of domestic scenes within the catastrophe, such as individuals attempting to salvage belongings or seeking shelter in makeshift structures, which adds a human dimension to the grand scale of the divine punishment.
The print is signed with the artist's monogram and dated 1544 at the bottom centre. This work is a fine example of the technical proficiency achieved by Vellert, who was also a stained glass designer. His experience with glass painting is evident in the way he manages light and shadow across the surface of the print. The composition avoids a single point of focus, instead encouraging the viewer to scan the entire scene to absorb the multitude of individual narratives contained within the larger event. It remains a significant piece for those interested in the development of print culture in the sixteenth century.
