A powerful lithograph by Ernst Barlach from his 'Dance of the Dead' series, capturing a skeletal figure in a stark, expressionist style.
Ernst Barlach produced this lithograph as part of his series titled 'Der Totentanz' (The Dance of the Dead). Created during the First World War, the work reflects the artist's preoccupation with mortality and the human condition. Barlach, a sculptor and graphic artist, utilised the lithographic medium to achieve a stark, high-contrast aesthetic that aligns with the broader concerns of German Expressionism.
The composition depicts a skeletal figure scaling the exterior of a gothic structure. The figure is rendered with jagged, energetic lines that convey a sense of frantic movement. To the left, a shadowy, indistinct scene suggests a gathering or a procession, contrasting with the vertical, isolated action of the central skeleton. Barlach avoids fine detail in favour of heavy, gestural marks that build form through shadow and mass. The architectural elements, such as the arched windows, provide a rigid framework for the fluid, almost grotesque motion of the central figure.
Barlach's work often explored themes of suffering and spiritual struggle. In this series, the traditional medieval motif of the Danse Macabre is reinterpreted through a modern, twentieth-century lens. The print does not rely on intricate shading; instead, it uses the raw texture of the lithographic crayon to create a sense of unease. The stark black-and-white palette emphasises the dramatic tension between the living world and the encroaching presence of death. This piece demonstrates Barlach's ability to condense complex psychological narratives into a singular, powerful image. The artist's signature is visible in the lower right corner, confirming the authenticity of this print from his graphic oeuvre.
