A fine nineteenth-century etching by Jules de Goncourt, capturing a pastoral scene with a bull and a figure near a water trough.
Jules de Goncourt, better known for his collaborative literary works with his brother Edmond, was also a skilled etcher. This work, The Bull, demonstrates his technical proficiency with the needle and acid bath. The composition features a central bovine figure positioned near a water trough, with a small figure of a child or person seated to the left. The background is rendered with dense, atmospheric hatching that suggests a wooded or rural setting, typical of the mid-nineteenth-century interest in rustic subjects.
The etching technique allows for a high degree of spontaneity. Goncourt uses varied line weights to define the musculature of the animal and the texture of the surrounding foliage. The contrast between the dark, shadowed areas of the trees and the lighter, more open space around the bull creates a sense of depth without relying on rigid perspective. The mark-making is energetic, reflecting the artist's interest in the expressive potential of the etched line rather than a purely photographic reproduction of the scene.
This piece belongs to a period when etching experienced a revival among French artists, who sought to reclaim the medium as a form of original artistic expression rather than a tool for commercial reproduction. Goncourt's approach is characteristic of this movement, prioritising the hand of the artist and the unique qualities of the copper plate. The print captures a quiet, pastoral moment, rendered with a focus on form and light. It is a representative example of the graphic output of the Goncourt brothers, who were central figures in the Parisian cultural scene of the Second Empire. The work remains a study in tonal balance and the effective use of negative space to frame a subject.
