A mid-eighteenth-century woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro depicting the kabuki actor Arashi Otohachi in a cross-dressed role.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro depicts the kabuki actor Arashi Otohachi in a cross-dressed role. The composition belongs to the yakusha-e genre, which focuses on the portrayal of kabuki performers. The artist employs the benizuri-e technique, a style of colour printing that typically uses two or three pigments, often pink and green, applied to the paper alongside the black ink lines.
The scene shows two figures beneath a large, dark green umbrella. The figure on the left wears a peach-coloured outer garment decorated with circular floral motifs and carries two swords, identifying the character as a samurai. The figure on the right, holding the umbrella, wears a green kimono patterned with maple leaves. The background is minimal, featuring a pine branch that suggests an outdoor setting. The figures are rendered with the characteristic elongated proportions and fluid lines associated with the Torii school, which maintained a close relationship with the kabuki theatres of Edo.
Torii Kiyohiro was active during the mid-eighteenth century. His work reflects the conventions of the period, where actors were celebrated for their ability to portray diverse roles, including those of the opposite gender. The inclusion of calligraphy within the print provides context for the performance or the actor's identity. The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, muted tone that complements the faded pigments of the original print. This piece offers a view into the visual culture of the Edo period, where the theatre and the print market were closely linked. The print is a representative example of the aesthetic priorities of the Torii lineage, which prioritised the stylised representation of the actor's posture and costume over realistic portraiture.
