A seminal work of geometric abstraction, Telephone Picture EM 3 explores the intersection of industrial production and artistic design.
Telephone Picture EM 3 is a work of geometric abstraction created by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy in 1922. The composition consists of a stark white background, a single vertical black bar, and a series of smaller red and yellow horizontal and vertical lines. The work is part of a series of five paintings that Moholy-Nagy commissioned over the telephone from a sign factory. By dictating the specifications to a commercial manufacturer, he removed the physical act of painting from the creative process.
This approach reflects the artist's interest in industrial production and the removal of the artist's hand from the final object. The use of porcelain enamel on steel further distances the work from traditional fine art materials, aligning it instead with the aesthetics of mass-produced signage. The composition is precise, balanced, and devoid of expressive brushwork. It relies entirely on the arrangement of primary colours and geometric forms to create visual tension.
Moholy-Nagy was a teacher at the Bauhaus, and this work embodies the school's interest in the relationship between art, technology, and industry. By using a telephone to convey his instructions, he challenged the notion of the artist as a craftsman. He instead positioned the artist as a designer who could control the outcome of a work through precise technical specifications. The resulting image is a study in clarity and reduction, stripping away representational elements to focus on the fundamental properties of line, colour, and space. The work remains a clear example of the Constructivist desire to integrate art into the modern industrial world, prioritising objective design over subjective emotion.
