A woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi illustrating a dramatic scene from the classic Japanese epic, Nanso Satomi Hakkenden.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicts a scene from the epic novel Nanso Satomi Hakkenden, written by Kyokutei Bakin. The narrative follows the adventures of eight samurai, each born with a crystal bead, who represent the virtues of loyalty, duty, and filial piety. Kuniyoshi, a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, frequently turned to literature and folklore for his subject matter. His work is known for its dramatic composition and technical skill in capturing movement.
The print is divided into two distinct panels. On the left, two figures engage in a physical confrontation, their postures tense and dynamic. The artist uses bold, clear lines to define their musculature and the folds of their garments. On the right, the scene shifts to the supernatural. A spectral figure emerges from swirling clouds, holding a skull, while a second individual below reacts with surprise. The contrast between the grounded combat on the left and the ethereal apparition on the right demonstrates Kuniyoshi's ability to blend reality with the fantastic.
As a print from a book illustration, the work maintains a balance between text and image. The calligraphic Japanese characters are integrated into the composition, framing the figures and providing context for the action. The muted colour palette, typical of period woodblock prints, relies on subtle ink washes to create depth and atmosphere. This piece offers a glimpse into the popular culture of the Edo period, where heroic tales and ghost stories were widely consumed through printed media. It remains a fine example of Kuniyoshi's narrative style, where every element contributes to the unfolding drama of the Hakkenden legend.
