Descrizione
A classic woodblock print from Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, depicting boatmen at Tago Bay with the mountain in the distance.
This woodblock print is part of the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a collection that established Hokusai as a master of the genre. The composition presents a view of Mount Fuji from the Tago Bay area, situated along the Tōkaidō road. Hokusai employs a distinct perspective, placing the mountain in the background while focusing on the activity of local boatmen in the foreground.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the ukiyo-e tradition. The artist uses a controlled colour palette, relying on Prussian blue for the mountain and the water, contrasted against the muted earth tones of the shoreline and the boats. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the shapes of the vessels and the distant peaks with clarity. The water is rendered through rhythmic, repeating patterns that suggest movement without disrupting the overall balance of the image.
In this work, Hokusai captures a moment of daily life within the broader context of the Japanese terrain. The inclusion of the small figures on the shore and the boatmen provides a sense of scale, grounding the monumental presence of Mount Fuji in human experience. The print reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between natural forms and human activity, a recurring theme throughout his career. The use of negative space, particularly in the sky and the mid-ground, allows the viewer to focus on the interplay between the sharp, angular forms of the boats and the soft, organic curves of the mountain and clouds. This piece remains a primary example of the aesthetic and technical standards of nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking.
