A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting the Surugadai district of Edo with Mount Fuji visible in the distance.
Surugadai in Edo is a woodblock print from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the early 1830s. This series represents a shift in the Ukiyo-e tradition, moving away from depictions of courtesans and actors towards the representation of natural scenery and the daily lives of common people. The print captures a view from the Surugadai district in Edo, known for its elevated position and proximity to the residences of high-ranking samurai.
The composition is structured around the contrast between the foreground activity and the distant horizon. On the left, a steep, green embankment is populated by figures carrying loads, their forms rendered with precise, economical lines. To the right, the tiled roof of a large building frames the scene, drawing the eye towards the background. In the far distance, the peak of Mount Fuji emerges, rendered with a subtle, pale outline that balances the darker tones of the foreground architecture and foliage. The sky transitions from a deep Prussian blue at the top to a lighter hue near the horizon, a technique Hokusai utilised to create atmospheric depth.
This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the interplay between urban development and the natural environment. The inclusion of the figures provides a sense of scale and human presence within the wider topography of Edo. The use of colour is restrained, relying on variations of green, blue, and earth tones to define the different planes of the image. As a piece of the Thirty-six Views series, it reflects the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where each colour required a separate carved block. The print remains a clear example of the aesthetic principles that defined the late Edo period, focusing on clarity of form and the observation of the world.
