A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting the first sunrise of the New Year at Susaki, featuring a serene coastal scene.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicts the traditional Japanese custom of hatsu-hinode, the first sunrise of the New Year. The scene is set at Susaki, a coastal area in Edo, where figures gather along the shoreline to witness the sun emerging over the horizon. Kuniyoshi employs a distinct compositional technique here, using strong, diagonal lines that draw the eye across the water toward the rising sun. This geometric approach contrasts with the more organic forms of the figures in the foreground and the distant, subtle silhouette of Mount Tsukuba.
The print belongs to the series Famous Places in the Eastern Capital (Toto meisho). Kuniyoshi, a master of the Utagawa school, is often associated with dynamic warrior prints and imaginative subjects, yet this work demonstrates his skill in capturing atmospheric conditions and local customs. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the deep blues of the sky and water, balanced by the muted earth tones of the shoreline and the soft red of the sun. The figures, dressed in traditional attire, stand on the grass, their postures suggesting a quiet, observant reverence for the dawn.
Technically, the print exhibits the precision of the woodblock medium, with clear outlines and flat areas of colour typical of the period. The inclusion of the series title within a red cartouche in the upper left corner and the artist's signature in the lower right provides clear identification of its origin. This work offers a glimpse into the social life of Edo-period Japan, where the observation of natural phenomena was deeply integrated into the cultural calendar. The composition remains balanced, avoiding excessive detail to maintain focus on the expansive horizon and the quiet anticipation of the crowd.
