A 1926 abstract composition by Paul Klee, featuring geometric architectural forms and delicate, skeletal lines against a textured, earthy background.
Paul Klee produced Summer Houses in 1926, a period during which his exploration of geometric abstraction and colour theory reached a high level of technical refinement. The composition presents a series of architectural forms that appear to float within a textured, atmospheric space. Klee employs a technique that suggests a layering of surfaces, where white, skeletal structures overlap with darker, more solid shapes. This creates a sense of depth that is not reliant on traditional perspective, but rather on the interaction of light and shadow across the picture plane.
The work displays Klee's interest in the reduction of natural forms to their essential components. The houses are not depicted as literal structures, but as signs or symbols of domesticity. The white, lattice-like lines that weave through the composition suggest scaffolding or perhaps the skeletal remains of buildings, contrasting with the solid, dark masses that anchor the centre. The background is composed of muted, earthy tones, which allow the lighter, more graphic elements to emerge. Klee's application of paint is varied, showing a sensitivity to the surface quality of the canvas, which adds a tactile dimension to the visual experience.
Throughout his career, Klee maintained a focus on the relationship between the artist and the natural world, often translating his observations into a personal visual language. In this piece, the interplay between the geometric and the organic is evident. The structures possess a fragile quality, as if they might dissolve into the surrounding space. This approach invites the viewer to engage with the image as a construction of ideas rather than a direct representation of a physical location. The work remains a clear example of Klee's ability to balance technical precision with a sense of poetic ambiguity, characteristic of his output during his tenure at the Bauhaus.

Artist Biography
Paul Klee
Paul Klee was a Swiss-born artist whose distinctive style drew from expressionism, cubism, surrealism, and orientalism. Originally trained as a violinist, Klee turned to visual art in his teens, drawn to its expressive freedom. Though he initially worked only in black and white and doubted he would ever become a painter, a transformative trip to Tunisia awakened his sensitivity to color and inspired his lifelong exploration of its possibilities. Today, Klee is recognized as a pioneer of color theory, and his Writings on Form and Design Theory are considered as foundational to modern art as Leonardo da Vinci’s treatises were to the Renaissance.
