A refined ink wash screen painting by Unkoku Tōgan, depicting the literary figures Su Shi and Pan Lang in a minimalist, atmospheric setting.
This work by Unkoku Tōgan depicts two figures from Chinese literary tradition, Su Shi and Pan Lang, rendered in the ink wash style characteristic of the Unkoku school. Tōgan, who claimed artistic lineage from the Muromachi master Sesshū Tōyō, utilised the screen format to explore the relationship between human figures and the natural world. The composition relies on the economy of line and the strategic use of negative space, a technique known as yohaku-no-bi, which allows the viewer to focus on the subtle gestures of the travellers and their mounts.
Su Shi, the celebrated Song dynasty poet, is shown in a contemplative state, while Pan Lang, the hermit-poet, is depicted with his characteristic donkey. The figures are placed within a sparse environment, defined by minimal rock formations and distant, misty slopes. Tōgan employs a restrained palette, using ink washes to suggest depth and atmosphere without resorting to heavy detail. The brushwork is precise, reflecting the artist's training in the Zen-influenced traditions of the period. The screen format, divided into panels, creates a rhythmic progression as the eye moves across the scene, mirroring the slow pace of the journey depicted.
This piece demonstrates the technical control of the Momoyama period, where artists balanced the decorative requirements of large-scale commissions with the austere aesthetic of ink painting. The figures appear as silhouettes against the pale paper, their forms simplified to capture the essence of their historical and literary personas. By focusing on these specific cultural figures, Tōgan connects his work to a broader tradition of East Asian literati painting, while maintaining the distinct stylistic identity of his own school. The work remains a clear example of how ink wash techniques were adapted for the folding screen format, providing a sense of quietude and intellectual reflection.
