An anatomical study by Jacopo Ligozzi, featuring the musculature of a suspended cadaver rendered in pen and brown ink.
Jacopo Ligozzi, a Veronese artist who spent much of his career in Florence under the patronage of the Medici, produced this anatomical study during a period when scientific observation and artistic practice were closely linked. The drawing depicts the musculature of a suspended cadaver, focusing on the tension in the arms and hands. Ligozzi employs a precise, calligraphic line to define the skeletal and muscular structure, using brown wash to model the forms and suggest volume.
The work reflects the broader interest in empirical observation that characterised the late Renaissance and Mannerist periods. Ligozzi was known for his scientific accuracy, often working in collaboration with naturalists and physicians. His approach to the human form here is clinical, yet it retains the expressive quality typical of his draughtsmanship. The composition is focused, isolating specific limbs to analyse their mechanics under the strain of suspension. The paper shows signs of age, with the ink having faded to a warm, sepia tone that enhances the clarity of the anatomical details.
This drawing provides insight into the methods of artists who sought to understand the physical reality of the body. By examining the cadaver, Ligozzi was able to translate the complexities of human anatomy into a visual language that informed his larger compositions. The study is a practical document, intended for reference rather than public display, which accounts for its direct and unadorned presentation. It remains a clear example of the intersection between art and early modern science, demonstrating the rigour applied to the study of the human form in the sixteenth century.
