A detailed sixteenth-century etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicting the public distribution of bread, featuring heraldic elements and Latin inscriptions.
This etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicts a scene of public charity, specifically the distribution of bread to the populace. The composition is organised around several large wooden tubs filled with loaves, from which figures are actively tossing bread into a gathered crowd. The scene is rendered with the characteristic precision of early sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking, employing fine cross-hatching to define the forms of the figures and the texture of the containers.
At the top of the print, a decorative cartouche provides historical context in French, referencing Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, and his lineage. Flanking this text are heraldic emblems, which serve to formalise the event as a state-sanctioned act of benevolence. The Latin inscription at the base, 'PANIS OMNIS GENERIS PASSIM OMNIBVS DISTRIBVTVs', translates to 'Bread of every kind distributed everywhere to all', reinforcing the theme of universal provision.
Hogenberg, active in the early sixteenth century, was known for his work documenting the processions and public events associated with the court of Charles V. This print belongs to a larger series documenting the life and triumphs of the Emperor. The figures are depicted in dynamic poses, capturing the urgency and movement of the crowd as they reach for the bread. The artist uses a clear, structured approach to narrative, balancing the central action with the formal heraldry above. The work provides a window into the visual culture of the period, where print media functioned as a primary tool for disseminating information about royal activities and public policy. The technical execution reflects the transition from earlier woodcut traditions to the more fluid possibilities offered by etching, allowing for greater detail in the rendering of the figures and the surrounding environment.
