A detailed 1648 study by Dutch artist Margareta de Heer, featuring roses, butterflies, and insects rendered in watercolour and gouache.
Margareta de Heer, a painter active in Leeuwarden during the seventeenth century, produced this study of flora and fauna in 1648. The composition features two pale pink roses resting upon a stone ledge, accompanied by a selection of insects and a snail. De Heer demonstrates a precise approach to natural history illustration, capturing the specific anatomical details of the butterfly wings and the texture of the caterpillar.
The work reflects the broader interest in natural philosophy and the classification of the natural world that occupied many Dutch artists of the period. By isolating these specimens against a neutral, shallow background, the artist directs the viewer to the physical characteristics of each subject. The inclusion of the snail, the caterpillar, and the chrysalis alongside the blossoms suggests an interest in the life cycles of organisms, a common theme in scientific and artistic circles of the time.
De Heer was the daughter of the painter Arjen de Heer and belonged to a family of artists. Her work is often associated with the tradition of botanical and zoological drawing, which required a steady hand and a keen eye for observation. The use of watercolour and gouache allows for a delicate rendering of the petals and the soft bodies of the insects. This piece provides a clear example of the technical skill required for such detailed work, where the artist balances scientific accuracy with a composed, aesthetic arrangement. The signature and date are visible in the lower right corner, confirming its provenance within her body of work.
