An eighteenth-century etching by Cosmo Mogalli depicting a classical marble statue of Leda, featuring precise line work and academic detail.
This print by Cosmo Mogalli depicts a classical sculpture of Leda, the mythological figure from Greek antiquity. Mogalli, an Italian engraver active in Florence, produced this work as part of a larger series documenting the collection of antique statues held by the Grand Duke of Tuscany. The print captures the figure in a contrapposto stance, draped in heavy fabric that falls in deep, rhythmic folds. A small swan, representing the form taken by Zeus during his encounter with Leda, is tucked into the folds of her garment near her waist.
The composition is clean and academic, reflecting the eighteenth-century interest in documenting classical antiquities for scholarly study. Mogalli employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to render the texture of the marble and the weight of the drapery. The figure is set against a plain background, allowing the viewer to focus on the anatomical accuracy and the sculptural form. The lower margin includes the title 'LEDA' and the names of the draughtsman, Giovanni Domenico Campiglia, and the engraver, Cosmo Mogalli. This work belongs to the tradition of reproductive printmaking, which allowed European collectors and artists to study famous statues located in Italian galleries without travelling to the site. The print maintains a neutral, objective tone, consistent with the encyclopaedic nature of the publication from which it originates. It provides a clear visual record of the sculpture as it appeared in the mid-eighteenth century, demonstrating the technical skill of the Florentine school of engraving during this period.
