A detailed graphite and wash drawing by Jacob van Strij, depicting a man resting with a bundle of sticks against a wooden fence.
This drawing by Jacob van Strij depicts a solitary figure, a man carrying a bundle of sticks on his back, resting against a wooden fence. The artist, a native of Dordrecht, was well known for his ability to capture the quiet, everyday life of the Dutch countryside. His work often reflects the influence of seventeenth-century masters, particularly Aelbert Cuyp, whose pastoral themes and atmospheric light informed much of van Strij's output.
The composition is balanced and deliberate. The man stands in profile, his posture suggesting a moment of respite during a day of labour. The bundle of sticks is rendered with precise, fine lines, contrasting with the softer, more atmospheric treatment of the background. The fence provides a strong horizontal element that anchors the figure within the space. Van Strij employs a subtle range of grey washes to create depth and volume, particularly in the folds of the man's clothing and the texture of the wood. The background features a sparse, wintery scene with a distant waterway and a small boat, typical of the regional settings he favoured.
Van Strij's technical skill is evident in the handling of light and shadow, which gives the figure a tangible presence. The drawing is signed in the lower right corner, a common practice for the artist. This piece offers a glimpse into the observational habits of an artist who sought to document the rural character of the Netherlands during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It is a study of form and human activity, presented with a clarity that avoids unnecessary ornamentation. The work remains a fine example of the draughtsmanship prevalent in the Dutch tradition of the period, focusing on the dignity of common subjects through careful observation and disciplined technique.
