A satirical etching from 1807 by George Cruikshank, depicting a humorous and blunt social encounter between a man and a woman.
This etching, titled Staffordshire Courtship!!, is a characteristic example of early nineteenth-century British social satire. Published on 1 January 1807 by Thomas Tegg, the print features the work of George Cruikshank, who collaborated with the artist George Moutard Woodward on this piece. The scene depicts a humorous domestic encounter between a woman and a man, identified as Mr Clump, seated at a table. The woman gestures towards a small dog, remarking on its appearance, to which Mr Clump replies with a blunt, insulting comparison regarding her own sex.
Cruikshank, a prolific illustrator and caricaturist, was known for his sharp observations of contemporary manners and social foibles. The etching employs the typical visual language of the period, using exaggerated facial features and simple, clear line work to convey the narrative. The hand-applied colour adds a layer of definition to the figures, distinguishing the woman's yellow-spotted gown from the man's blue coat and yellow breeches. The interior setting is sparse, focusing the viewer's attention entirely on the interaction between the two figures and the animal.
Such prints were popular in London at the time, often sold in shops or rented out as part of collections for public amusement. The humour relies on the social awkwardness and the biting wit common in Georgian-era caricatures. By capturing this fleeting moment of social friction, the print offers a glimpse into the popular culture and comedic sensibilities of the early 1800s. The work remains a fine example of the collaborative nature of print production during this era, where artists and publishers worked in tandem to produce affordable, topical imagery for a wide audience.
