Descrizione
A classic example of early twentieth-century Cubism, this work by Albert Gleizes deconstructs the human form into geometric planes and muted, earthy tones.
This work by Albert Gleizes demonstrates the analytical approach to form that defined the early twentieth-century Parisian avant-garde. As a member of the Section d'Or group, Gleizes sought to reconcile the fragmentation of Cubism with a sense of structural order. In this composition, the figure is broken into geometric planes, with the body and the surrounding space integrated through a shared vocabulary of angular lines and muted, earthy tones.
The subject, a seated woman, is rendered not as a static object but as a series of intersecting surfaces. The artist uses a palette of ochre, muted green, and deep blue to define the volumes of the figure against the background. The brushwork is deliberate, emphasising the construction of the image rather than the illusion of depth. By flattening the pictorial space, Gleizes forces the viewer to engage with the painting as a physical object composed of paint and canvas.
This piece reflects the period when Gleizes was moving away from the monochromatic experiments of early Cubism toward a more rhythmic, structured style. The figure's posture is contemplative, yet the treatment of the anatomy remains secondary to the overall geometric arrangement. The interplay between the white cloth draped over the figure and the surrounding dark, faceted shapes creates a balance of light and shadow. This work provides a clear example of the intellectual rigour applied to the human form during the development of modern European painting.
