A raw, expressive marine scene by Alfred Wallis, depicting the wreck of the 'Alba' on the Cornish coast using oil and pencil on cardboard.
Alfred Wallis, a former Cornish fisherman and scrap merchant, began painting in his late sixties. He lacked formal training, yet his work possesses a directness that attracted the attention of Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood in 1928. This piece depicts the wreck of the 'Alba', a steamship that ran aground off the coast of Cornwall. Wallis often utilised scavenged materials, painting directly onto irregular pieces of cardboard with household paints. His approach to perspective is intuitive rather than academic, prioritising the memory of the event over realistic spatial representation.
The composition is dominated by the dark, hulking form of the vessel caught between jagged cliffs. White, agitated brushstrokes represent the turbulent sea, creating a sense of immediate motion around the hull. The lighthouse, perched on the cliffside, serves as a stark marker of the dangerous coastline. Wallis frequently used a limited palette, relying on the raw colour of the cardboard to provide a neutral base for his application of black, white, and ochre. The signature 'A Wallis' appears in the upper margin, a common feature of his works.
This image captures the raw, unrefined nature of Wallis's output. His work is often categorised as naive or outsider art, though his influence on the St Ives group of artists remains a subject of study. By stripping away the conventions of traditional marine painting, Wallis focused on the essential elements of the maritime experience. The result is a work that feels urgent and personal, reflecting his long life spent at sea. The lack of depth and the flattened forms are characteristic of his style, which sought to convey the reality of the ocean through simplified shapes and bold, expressive marks.
