A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Jonas Suyderhoef, depicting shepherds and livestock navigating a mountain path, based on a work by Nicolaes Berchem.
This print by Jonas Suyderhoef captures a pastoral scene, reflecting the Dutch Golden Age interest in rural life and the natural world. Suyderhoef, a skilled printmaker from Leiden, often translated the works of contemporary painters into the medium of engraving. This particular composition is based on a painting by Nicolaes Berchem, whose name appears on the plate as the original artist (Berghem pinxit).
The image depicts a group of shepherds guiding their livestock through a narrow mountain pass. The figures, including a man mounted on a donkey and a youth on foot, are accompanied by cattle, sheep, and a dog. The terrain is rugged, defined by steep rock faces and a winding path that leads the eye into the distance. Suyderhoef employs a variety of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to render the textures of the stone, the foliage of the trees, and the soft coats of the animals. The light source appears to come from the upper left, casting gentle shadows that provide volume to the figures and the surrounding geological features.
Such prints were popular among collectors during the seventeenth century, offering a window into the idealised, tranquil life of the countryside. The technical precision of the engraving allows for a high degree of detail, from the individual blades of grass to the subtle expressions of the animals. The work demonstrates the collaborative nature of the print market in the Netherlands, where the creative vision of a painter was disseminated to a wider audience through the technical expertise of a specialist engraver. This fine art print preserves the tonal qualities and linear clarity of the original copper plate, providing a clear view of the seventeenth-century printmaking craft.
