An evocative lithographic self-portrait by Austrian Expressionist Oskar Kokoschka, capturing the artist in a moment of intense creative focus.
This lithographic self-portrait by Oskar Kokoschka captures the artist in a moment of intense introspection. Created during a period of significant personal and artistic development, the work reflects the psychological depth characteristic of the Austrian Expressionist movement. Kokoschka employs a raw, gestural line quality that prioritises emotional resonance over anatomical precision. The heavy, dark hatching creates a sense of agitation, framing the subject against a dense, shadowed background that pushes the figure forward.
The artist depicts himself holding a pen, a detail that draws attention to his identity as a creator. His gaze is directed away from the viewer, suggesting a state of internal focus or creative struggle. The facial features are rendered with sharp, angular strokes, conveying a sense of nervous energy. This approach to portraiture was typical of Kokoschka, who often sought to reveal the inner life of his subjects through distorted forms and high-contrast shading. The composition is tight, focusing entirely on the bust, which amplifies the psychological tension present in the work.
As a print, this piece demonstrates the artist's mastery of lithography, using the medium to replicate the immediacy of his drawing style. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface creates a dramatic effect, typical of the graphic works produced by the Expressionists in the early twentieth century. This print offers a direct encounter with the artist's persona, stripped of academic artifice. It remains a compelling example of how Kokoschka used his own image to explore themes of identity and the creative process. The work is a study in line and shadow, where every mark serves to communicate the artist's subjective experience.

Artist Biography
Oskar Kokoschka
He was born in 1886 in Pochlarn, Austria. He was shot through the head in Ukraine and bayoneted in the chest in Russia. He survived both.
After the war, he commissioned a Munich dollmaker named Hermine Moos to create a life-size replica of Alma, sending detailed instructions about the feel of her skin and the weight of her body. Moos covered the figure in feathers instead. Kokoschka eventually staged a public execution: he decapitated the doll and smashed a bottle of wine over its head on his lawn. The police arrived the next morning, thinking he had murdered a woman.
The Nazis declared him a degenerate artist. He fled Czechoslovakia for London after the Munich Agreement and became a British citizen in 1947. His Expressionist portraits are among the most psychologically penetrating of the twentieth century: raw, agitated surfaces that seem to expose the sitter's interior state. He lived to ninety-four.
