A refined red chalk drawing by Herman Coets depicting the biblical creation of the firmament, featuring a central dove surrounded by putti.
This red chalk drawing by Herman Coets depicts the biblical creation of the firmament, as described in Genesis. The composition is organised around a central, circular mass of swirling clouds, which represents the division of the waters. A dove, symbolising the Holy Spirit, is positioned at the centre of this formation, radiating light outwards. The scene is framed by a series of putti, or winged infants, who float in the surrounding space. Their gestures and postures direct the viewer's attention toward the central event.
The use of red chalk, a medium favoured by artists of the period for its ability to convey soft modelling and delicate tonal transitions, allows Coets to create a sense of ethereal movement within the clouds. The lines are precise, demonstrating a high level of technical control in the rendering of the figures and the atmospheric effects. The bottom of the sheet includes a handwritten inscription in Dutch, referencing the specific biblical passage from Genesis, which was a common practice for works intended for devotional or educational purposes.
Coets employs a balanced, symmetrical arrangement that reflects the orderly nature of the divine act. The putti are distributed evenly around the central sphere, creating a sense of harmony and equilibrium. The work is characteristic of early eighteenth-century Dutch draughtsmanship, where religious themes were often explored with a focus on clarity and narrative precision. The absence of heavy shading allows the paper's texture to contribute to the overall light quality of the image, giving the scene a luminous, airy appearance. This piece offers a clear example of how artists of the era interpreted complex theological concepts through classical iconography and refined technical execution.
