A delicate woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicting a traditional monkey trainer and his companion, rendered with the characteristic precision of the Ukiyo-e school.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicts a sarumawashi, or monkey trainer, a common itinerant performer in Edo-period Japan. The artist captures the trainer in a moment of quiet focus, holding a lead attached to a small monkey dressed in a patterned jacket. The composition is balanced by the presence of a folding screen in the background, which features a stylised pine tree and a rising sun, elements that provide a sense of place and seasonal context.
Eisen, a prolific designer of ukiyo-e prints, was known for his ability to render figures with a distinct sense of character. His work often moved away from the idealised beauty seen in the prints of his contemporaries, favouring a more grounded approach to his subjects. The use of line here is precise, defining the folds of the trainer's kimono and the texture of the monkey's fur with economy. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper portion of the print suggests this work may have been part of a surimono series, which were privately commissioned prints often exchanged among poets and artists.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, muted greens, and earthy tones, which allows the viewer to focus on the interaction between the trainer and the animal. The screen behind them acts as a framing device, creating a shallow stage-like space that is characteristic of the period's aesthetic. This print offers a glimpse into the social history of the era, documenting the lives of those who travelled the countryside to entertain the public. The work remains a fine example of the technical skill involved in the production of Japanese woodblock prints, from the initial drawing to the carving and printing stages.
