A fine nineteenth-century engraving by Antonio Dalcò, depicting Christ as the Salvator Mundi after the original painting by Andrea del Sarto.
This fine engraving by Antonio Dalcò presents a devotional image of Christ as the Salvator Mundi, or Saviour of the World. The composition is based on an original painting by the Renaissance master Andrea del Sarto. Dalcò, an Italian engraver active during the nineteenth century, demonstrates technical precision in his translation of the tonal qualities found in the original oil painting into the linear language of the burin.
The figure of Christ is depicted in a half-length pose, his hands crossed over his chest in a gesture of humility and grace. His gaze is directed towards the viewer, conveying a sense of calm authority. The artist employs subtle gradations of light and shadow to model the facial features and the folds of the drapery, creating a sense of volume and physical presence. The halo, rendered with delicate concentric lines, provides a luminous contrast to the darker background, drawing attention to the subject's expression.
This print serves as an example of the nineteenth-century tradition of reproductive engraving, where master engravers sought to disseminate the compositions of earlier masters to a wider audience. The inscription at the base of the print identifies the collaborative nature of the work, noting the original painter, the draughtsman C. Ferreri, and Dalcò as the engraver working under the direction of Toschi. The inclusion of the handwritten note at the bottom of the sheet, which identifies the subject and the engraver, suggests this is a fine proof impression. The work reflects the academic rigour of the period, prioritising clarity of form and balanced composition. It remains a representative example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Italian printmakers during this era, capturing the solemnity and quietude of the original Renaissance source material.
