A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Laurens Eillarts, depicting Julius Caesar in a formal equestrian pose.
This engraving by the Dutch artist Laurens Eillarts depicts Julius Caesar in a traditional equestrian pose. The composition draws upon classical iconography, presenting the Roman leader as a military commander. Caesar is shown in profile, mounted on a horse that is captured in a rearing position. He wears a laurel wreath and ornate armour, including a lion-head shoulder piece, which signifies his status and authority. In his hand, he holds a baton, a common attribute for military leaders in early modern European art.
The print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of Dutch engraving during the early seventeenth century. Eillarts employs a system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the horse and the texture of the metallic armour. The drapery of the cloak, flowing behind the figure, adds a sense of movement to the otherwise static, monumental composition. The base of the image features a pedestal inscribed with the name 'DIVI IVLI CAESAR AVG', which anchors the figure within a historical context.
Equestrian portraits of this nature were popular in the period, often produced as part of series documenting Roman emperors or historical figures. The work reflects the interest in classical antiquity that permeated European art at the time. The artist focuses on the clarity of form and the balanced arrangement of the subject. The horse is rendered with a degree of stylisation, typical of the period, while the figure of Caesar maintains a stoic expression. This print provides an example of how historical narratives were visualised through the medium of engraving, serving as both a record of classical history and an exercise in printmaking skill. The monochromatic palette allows the viewer to focus on the line work and the structural composition of the scene.
