A precise graphite study by Hendrik Voogd depicting the weathered Roman ruins at the harbour of Trajan in Fiumicino.
Hendrik Voogd, a Dutch artist who spent the majority of his career in Rome, produced this graphite study during his extensive travels through the Italian countryside. The drawing depicts the weathered remains of a structure situated within the ancient harbour of Trajan at Fiumicino. Voogd is often associated with the tradition of the Dutch Italianate painters, yet his approach to this subject remains grounded in the direct observation typical of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
The composition focuses on the skeletal remains of a brick archway, which stands isolated against a sparse, open horizon. Voogd employs a delicate graphite technique to capture the texture of the crumbling masonry and the encroaching vegetation atop the ruin. The lines are precise, reflecting a disciplined hand that prioritises structural clarity over atmospheric drama. By omitting complex background details, the artist directs the viewer to the physical decay of the Roman architecture, a common subject for Northern European artists visiting Italy during this period.
This work functions as a record of the site, capturing the interplay between man-made construction and the natural environment. The shading is minimal, relying on light hatching to suggest volume and the passage of time on the stone surfaces. The inscription 'Fiumicino' in the upper left corner confirms the location, providing a specific geographical anchor for the study. As a preparatory sketch or a private record of his travels, the drawing offers insight into the methodical process Voogd utilised to document the classical remnants that defined the Roman periphery. It is a quiet, observational piece that avoids romantic embellishment, presenting the ruin as a tangible object of historical interest.
