A 1770 ink and wash drawing by Jacob Philipp Hackert, depicting a mountainous Italian scene with travellers on a path.
Jacob Philipp Hackert, a German painter active during the eighteenth century, produced this work in 1770. The drawing depicts a mountainous region near Cava de' Tirreni, a location frequently visited by artists on the Grand Tour. Hackert, who spent much of his career in Italy, developed a reputation for his precise topographical observations and his ability to capture the specific light and atmosphere of the Mediterranean environment.
The composition follows a classical arrangement, utilising a large rock formation in the foreground to frame the view. This device directs the eye toward the central path, where two figures accompany a mule. The middle ground features dense foliage and rugged terrain, while the background reveals a steep mountain slope under a clear sky. Hackert employs a monochromatic palette of ink washes to define the forms, creating a sense of depth through the subtle gradation of tone. The lines are controlled and deliberate, reflecting the artist's training and his adherence to the aesthetic principles of the period.
This drawing demonstrates the artist's interest in the relationship between human figures and the natural world. The inclusion of travellers on a mountain road provides a sense of scale and narrative, grounding the scene in the reality of contemporary travel. Hackert's work remains a document of the Italian terrain as it appeared to travellers in the late eighteenth century. The technical execution, particularly the handling of light and shadow, shows the artist's mastery of the wash technique. This print offers a view into the artistic practices of the era, where the study of nature was combined with a structured approach to composition. It is a representative example of the topographical drawings that were highly sought after by collectors of the time.
