A detailed etching by the comte de Caylus depicting the mythological rescue of Angelica from Orlando Furioso.
This etching depicts a scene from Ludovico Ariosto's epic poem, Orlando Furioso. The narrative centres on the rescue of Angelica, who is chained to a rock, by the knight Roger. The artist, the comte de Caylus, was a prominent French antiquarian and amateur engraver who frequently explored classical and literary themes through his printmaking practice.
The composition is structured around a foreground figure of Angelica, who reclines in a state of vulnerability near a creature, while the background reveals a fortified town and a bridge. The artist employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the rocky terrain and the foliage of the tree that frames the left side of the scene. The sky is filled with swirling clouds, suggesting a dramatic atmosphere that contrasts with the stillness of the foreground.
Caylus was known for his interest in the technical aspects of engraving, often experimenting with the medium to achieve specific tonal effects. His work reflects the eighteenth-century fascination with literary subjects and the revival of classical motifs. The print demonstrates a clear focus on narrative clarity, with the figures and the environment integrated into a cohesive visual story. The etching style is characteristic of the period, prioritising line work to create depth and texture across the paper surface. This piece offers an insight into the artistic pursuits of the French aristocracy during the Enlightenment, where the study of history and literature informed creative output. The print is a fine example of the period's preference for mythological subjects rendered with a balance of technical precision and imaginative interpretation.
