A seminal Pre-Raphaelite work depicting a dramatic scene of vengeance and historical narrative, painted by William Holman Hunt in 1849.
William Holman Hunt painted this work at the age of twenty-one, marking the first major exhibition piece of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The subject derives from Edward Bulwer-Lytton's 1835 novel, Rienzi, which recounts the life of the medieval Roman tribune Cola di Rienzo. The scene depicts the moment Rienzi discovers the body of his younger brother, who was killed during a violent clash between the rival Colonna and Orsini families.
Technically, the painting demonstrates the early Pre-Raphaelite focus on bright, clear colours and meticulous attention to detail. Hunt spent significant time researching medieval costume and armour to ensure historical accuracy, a practice that defined his career. The composition is structured around the central figure of Rienzi, whose raised fist signals his oath of vengeance against the aristocratic factions. The surrounding figures, including the mourning woman and the mounted soldiers in the background, provide a sense of narrative urgency.
Light plays a specific role in the composition, with the cool, pale sky contrasting against the warm, earthy tones of the foreground. The inclusion of the crescent moon in the upper left corner adds a temporal dimension to the scene, suggesting the transition from day to night. This work was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1849, where it received both praise and criticism for its departure from the established academic style of the period. The painting remains a primary example of the Brotherhood's early aesthetic, which sought to return to the clarity and sincerity found in art produced before the time of Raphael. Its narrative intensity and technical precision offer a window into the intellectual and artistic ambitions of the young artists who formed the group.
