A 1934 abstract composition by Robert Delaunay, featuring concentric circles and radiating colour bands that explore the optical effects of light.
Robert Delaunay produced Rhythm no. 1 in 1934, a period during which he moved away from his earlier figurative subjects to focus entirely on the mechanics of colour and circular form. This work belongs to his later series of abstract compositions, which explore the optical effects of light and movement through geometric arrangements. Delaunay was a primary figure in the development of Orphism, a movement that prioritised the lyrical use of colour over the rigid structures of early Cubism.
The composition is dominated by concentric circles and intersecting arcs that suggest a sense of rotation and speed. Delaunay employs a palette of primary colours, including red, blue, and yellow, balanced by grey tones and a spectrum of rainbow-like bands. These elements create a sense of depth without relying on traditional perspective. The lines are clean and precise, reflecting the artist's interest in the scientific theories of colour perception, particularly those of Michel Eugène Chevreul regarding simultaneous contrast.
By arranging these shapes in a non-representational manner, Delaunay invites the viewer to experience the painting as a sequence of visual sensations. The work does not depict a specific object or scene, but rather the energy of light itself. The interplay between the solid circular forms and the radiating bands of colour creates a rhythmic quality, as the title suggests. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise complex optical theories into a coherent visual language. It remains a clear example of his mature style, where the focus is placed on the purity of form and the interaction of hues on the canvas surface.

Rhythm no. 1 - Robert Delaunay
Artist Biography
Robert Delaunay
His groundbreaking series, *Windows*, exemplifies this pursuit. Forget conventional perspective; Delaunay fragmented the canvas into kaleidoscopic shards of colour, creating a sensation of light, movement, and depth. This exploration of simultaneity – the idea that multiple perspectives and sensations could be experienced at once – became a hallmark of his style. Delaunay's *Eiffel Tower* series offers a Cubist-influenced take on the famous landmark, but with a focus on colour and dynamism that sets it apart.
Though he flirted with abstraction, Delaunay never fully abandoned representational elements. His later works, such as *Rhythm No. 1*, demonstrate a masterful synthesis of abstraction and figuration. Delaunay's legacy extends beyond his own artistic output; he profoundly influenced generations of artists who sought to explore the expressive potential of colour and form. His art prints offer a window into a world where colour sings and light dances, enriching any space with their vibrant energy.
