A late-period still life by Vincent van Gogh, featuring a bouquet of poppies and daisies painted in Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890.
Painted in June 1890 during his final weeks in Auvers-sur-Oise, this still life captures a bouquet of wildflowers gathered from the surrounding fields. Vincent van Gogh produced this work shortly before his death, demonstrating his characteristic approach to colour and brushwork. The composition features a dense arrangement of red poppies, white daisies, and blue cornflowers contained within a simple, dark ceramic vase. The flowers sit upon a circular table, set against a background of pale, lime-green tones that contrast with the warm hues of the blossoms.
Van Gogh applied the paint with visible, rhythmic strokes, creating a sense of movement within the floral display. The poppies, rendered in varying shades of vermilion and scarlet, dominate the upper portion of the canvas. The white daisies provide a cooling balance to the intensity of the red, while the blue cornflowers add a secondary point of interest. The vase itself is painted with earthy, muted tones, grounding the composition. The background is relatively flat, allowing the form of the bouquet to occupy the primary visual space. This work reflects the artist's focus on nature and his ability to transform simple subjects into studies of light and colour. The application of paint is thick in areas, typical of his late period, where the texture of the medium contributes to the overall visual effect. The work remains a clear example of his late-career style, where he moved away from the more structured compositions of his earlier years toward a more expressive, immediate application of pigment.
