Descrizione
A 1936 modernist painting by Georgia O'Keeffe, depicting the iconic red hills and Cerro Pedernal of the New Mexico desert.
Georgia O'Keeffe produced this work in 1936, capturing the distinct geography of New Mexico. The composition features the rounded, sun-baked red hills of the Ghost Ranch area in the foreground, which contrast with the distant, flat-topped silhouette of Cerro Pedernal. O'Keeffe maintained a long fascination with this mountain, often painting it from various angles and distances throughout her career.
The painting demonstrates her characteristic approach to form and colour. She simplifies the geological features into smooth, rhythmic shapes, removing unnecessary detail to focus on the essential structure of the terrain. The palette relies on the juxtaposition of warm, earthy reds and pinks against the cool, pale blues of the sky and the distant range. This colour choice creates a sense of depth, pushing the mountain back while bringing the foreground hills forward.
O'Keeffe moved to New Mexico permanently in 1949, but she began spending summers there as early as 1934. The region provided her with a new visual vocabulary, shifting her focus from the urban architecture of New York to the expansive, arid beauty of the American Southwest. This work is an example of her ability to translate the physical reality of a place into a refined, semi-abstract image. The smooth application of paint and the clear, defined edges of the hills reflect her interest in precision and clarity. By isolating the mountain and the hills, she presents the viewer with a meditation on the permanence of the desert environment. The work remains a clear representation of her style, where natural forms are distilled into their most basic, powerful components.
