A Dutch Golden Age history painting by Hendrick Heerschop, depicting the biblical scene of Rebecca receiving gifts from Abraham's servant.
Hendrick Heerschop, a Dutch painter active in the seventeenth century, produced this work depicting a narrative from the Book of Genesis. The scene captures the moment Eliezer, the servant of Abraham, presents jewellery and gifts to Rebecca at the well. Heerschop employs a theatrical arrangement, placing the figures within a classical architectural setting that suggests a Mediterranean context. The servant kneels in a red robe, his posture indicating deference as he displays the contents of a chest. Rebecca sits to the right, draped in white fabric, her expression one of composed reception.
The composition utilises chiaroscuro to define the forms and create a sense of volume. Light emanates from an unseen source, catching the folds of Rebecca's gown and the metallic surfaces of the jewellery chest. In the background, secondary figures and a dog are rendered with less detail, allowing the primary interaction to remain the focus. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, with the deep red of the servant's garment providing a visual anchor. Heerschop's approach to the subject reflects the interest of Dutch Golden Age artists in biblical narratives, often treated with a focus on human emotion and material texture. The architectural elements, including the column and the base upon which Rebecca sits, provide a structured frame for the interaction. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to manage a multi-figure composition while maintaining a clear narrative arc. The attention to the textures of the clothing and the metallic sheen of the gifts is characteristic of the period's interest in realism and the depiction of luxury goods. The scene is quiet, lacking the dramatic movement found in some contemporary works, yet it conveys the gravity of the betrothal agreement through the careful positioning of the participants.
