A striking depiction of the American Radiator Building in New York City, captured at night with a focus on geometric form and artificial light.
Georgia O'Keeffe painted this work during her residence at the Shelton Hotel in New York City. The subject is the American Radiator Building, a structure completed in 1924 by architects Raymond Hood and André Fouilhoux. O'Keeffe captures the building at night, focusing on the contrast between the dark mass of the architecture and the artificial illumination of the windows.
The composition is vertical, reflecting the upward thrust of the skyscraper. O'Keeffe employs a restricted palette, dominated by deep blacks and browns, which allows the white and yellow light from the windows to appear luminous. A plume of white smoke drifts across the right side of the frame, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise static urban scene. The top of the building is illuminated by a spotlight, a feature of the original architectural design that O'Keeffe emphasises to draw the eye upward.
This painting is part of a series of New York cityscapes produced by the artist in the 1920s. Unlike many of her contemporaries who focused on the chaotic energy of the city, O'Keeffe presents a controlled, almost clinical view of the architecture. The windows are rendered as a grid of rectangles, creating a rhythmic pattern that spans the height of the structure. The work avoids the romanticised view of the city, opting instead for a precise observation of form and light. The absence of human figures reinforces the focus on the building as a sculptural object within the urban environment. By isolating the structure from its surroundings, O'Keeffe transforms the commercial architecture into a formal study of geometry and nocturnal atmosphere.
