A masterwork of 18th-century French still life, this painting by Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin captures the textures of a hanging hare and a copper pot with remarkable precision.
Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin was a master of the French still life, known for his ability to elevate humble, domestic objects through precise observation and a restrained palette. In this composition, a dead hare hangs vertically against a plain, textured wall, positioned beside a large, heavy copper pot. The contrast between the soft, furred texture of the animal and the smooth, metallic surface of the vessel demonstrates the artist's technical control over light and material.
Chardin avoids the theatricality often found in the art of his contemporaries. Instead, he focuses on the physical presence of the objects. The lighting is soft and directional, casting gentle shadows that define the volume of the pot and the limp form of the hare. A single piece of produce sits to the right, providing a counterpoint to the verticality of the hanging game. The background is kept intentionally simple, a neutral stone surface that prevents distraction from the primary subjects.
His approach to paint application is deliberate. He builds form through layers of pigment, capturing the subtle variations in colour within the brown and grey tones of the fur and the oxidised orange of the copper. This work reflects the 18th-century interest in the quiet observation of everyday life. By stripping away narrative or allegorical elements, Chardin invites the viewer to engage directly with the tactile qualities of the scene. The composition is balanced, grounded by the weight of the pot and the stillness of the objects on the table surface. It is a study in material reality, rendered with a quiet authority that defined his career.
