A detailed 1660 engraving by Jonas Suyderhoef, capturing the likeness of the Dutch theologian Johannes de Mey with technical precision.
This engraving by Jonas Suyderhoef depicts Johannes de Mey, a Dutch theologian and pastor, captured in 1660. Suyderhoef was a master of the burin, known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the linear language of printmaking. He frequently collaborated with contemporary painters, often reproducing their compositions to reach a wider audience of collectors and scholars.
The portrait follows the conventions of seventeenth-century clerical iconography. De Mey is presented within an oval frame, a common device that provides a sense of formal distance and dignity. He wears the traditional black cassock and white collar associated with the Reformed clergy of the period. His expression is one of calm authority, reflecting his role as a pastor and scholar. The Latin inscription surrounding the oval identifies the subject, his age of forty-four, and his professional titles, providing a clear historical record of the sitter.
Suyderhoef employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to model the form of the face and the texture of the fabric. The light source is directed from the upper left, creating subtle shadows that define the contours of the face and the folds of the clothing. The background, rendered with fine horizontal lines, ensures the figure remains the primary focus. This work demonstrates the technical precision required in Dutch printmaking during the mid-seventeenth century, where the engraver acted as both a craftsman and an interpreter of the sitter's character. The print serves as a document of the intellectual climate of the Netherlands, where portraiture was used to commemorate figures of religious and academic standing.
