A detailed seventeenth-century Dutch engraving depicting the civic leader Jacob Muys van Holy, complete with heraldic crest and biographical inscription.
This engraving depicts Jacob Muys van Holy, a figure of civic authority in Dordrecht during the Dutch Golden Age. The portrait follows the conventions of early seventeenth-century printmaking, employing a rigorous system of cross-hatching and parallel lines to define the textures of the subject's doublet and the soft folds of his ruff collar. The artist, Simon onder de Linde, captures the sitter with a direct, unadorned gaze, conveying a sense of gravity appropriate to his status as a burgomaster.
In the upper left corner, a coat of arms is rendered with precision, providing a heraldic marker of the sitter's lineage. The composition is structured around the central figure, whose hand rests firmly at his waist, a pose often associated with leadership and resolve. Below the portrait, a Dutch inscription provides a biographical summary of Muys van Holy's contributions to the city, specifically referencing his role in the defence of Dordrecht and his subsequent political appointments. The text serves as both a eulogy and a historical record, linking the visual image to the specific political climate of the period.
The print demonstrates the technical skill required for copperplate engraving, where the depth of tone is achieved through the density of the incised lines. The contrast between the dark, textured clothing and the lighter, more delicate treatment of the face and collar creates a clear hierarchy of visual interest. This work is a representative example of how portraiture was used to solidify the public identity of civic leaders in the Netherlands, combining traditional heraldry with contemporary print techniques to document the lives of those who held power in the burgeoning Dutch Republic.
