A formal seventeenth-century portrait engraving of the diplomat Isaak Volmar by the Dutch artist Pieter Nolpe.
This portrait by the Dutch printmaker Pieter Nolpe depicts Isaak Volmar, a diplomat who served as a plenipotentiary during the negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia. The work is executed in the style of seventeenth-century European portraiture, utilising a combination of etching and engraving to achieve a range of tonal values. Volmar is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for formal portrait prints of the period, which directs the viewer's focus toward the subject's facial features and expression.
Nolpe employs precise line work to render the textures of Volmar's attire, including the stiff, white collar and the dark, patterned doublet. The shading within the oval is achieved through parallel hatching and cross-hatching, which creates a sense of volume and depth. Below the portrait, a substantial inscription in Latin details Volmar's titles and roles, providing historical context for his position as a councillor and representative. The lettering is rendered in a formal, calligraphic script, typical of the period's administrative and commemorative documents.
As a printmaker active in Amsterdam, Nolpe was well-regarded for his technical proficiency in reproducing portraits of contemporary figures. This image captures the gravity expected of a diplomat involved in the complex political negotiations of the mid-seventeenth century. The composition is balanced and restrained, reflecting the formal requirements of official portraiture. The print serves as a record of Volmar's appearance and status, preserved through the medium of copperplate engraving. The clarity of the lines and the structured approach to the subject's likeness demonstrate the high standards of Dutch print production during the seventeenth century.
