Portret van de schilder Joachim Patinier - Dominicus Lampsonius

A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Dominicus Lampsonius, depicting the painter Joachim Patinier with accompanying Latin text.

This engraving by Dominicus Lampsonius depicts the painter Joachim Patinier. It belongs to the series 'Pictorum aliquot celebrium Germaniae inferioris effigies', a collection of portraits of famous artists from the Low Countries. The work demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of sixteenth-century printmaking, utilising fine, parallel hatching to model the subject's features and the texture of his clothing.

Patinier is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a soft, textured cap and a draped garment. His gaze is directed slightly away from the viewer, suggesting a contemplative state. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the majority of the frame, set against a background of horizontal lines that provide a neutral, structured space. The lower portion of the print contains a Latin inscription, which serves to identify the subject and provide biographical context, a common feature in humanist portraiture of the period.

Lampsonius, who was a painter, poet, and humanist, created this series to document the artistic heritage of his region. The engraving captures the likeness of Patinier, who is known for his contributions to the development of landscape painting in the early sixteenth century. The print reflects the intersection of art and scholarship during the Renaissance, where the visual representation of an artist was often accompanied by text to celebrate their contribution to the visual arts. The clarity of the line work and the careful attention to the play of light across the fabric demonstrate the skill involved in translating painted portraits into the medium of engraving. This print offers a clear view of the aesthetic values and the historical interest in artistic biography that defined the intellectual climate of the late sixteenth-century Netherlands.
