A refined mezzotint portrait of William III by Dutch master Godfried Schalcken, featuring his signature use of dramatic candlelight.
This mezzotint depicts William III, Prince of Orange, who served as Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic and later King of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The work is attributed to the Dutch painter Godfried Schalcken, an artist known for his mastery of artificial light and candlelight effects. Schalcken studied under Samuel van Hoogstraten and later Gerard Dou, the latter of whom influenced his focus on fine detail and dramatic chiaroscuro.
The composition presents the monarch in a half-length pose, leaning against a stone plinth. He holds a single lit candle, which acts as the primary source of illumination for the scene. This technique creates a stark contrast between the brightly lit features of the subject and the surrounding shadows. The light catches the texture of his elaborate wig and the folds of his garment, demonstrating the technical precision required by the mezzotint process. In the foreground, classical sculptural elements, including a bust and a torso, are visible, adding a layer of academic symbolism to the portrait.
Schalcken spent several years in London during the 1690s, where he found success as a portraitist among the English aristocracy. This print captures the refined aesthetic of the period, reflecting the formal conventions of late seventeenth-century European portraiture. The inclusion of Latin text at the base identifies the subject and the artist, a common practice for prints intended for circulation among collectors and scholars of the era. The work remains a representative example of the intersection between Dutch technical skill and the political portraiture of the late Stuart period.

Artist Biography
Godfried Schalcken
He was born in Made, North Brabant, in 1643, the son of a Latin school rector. He studied under Samuel van Hoogstraten in Dordrecht, then under Gerrit Dou in Leiden, absorbing the highly polished manner of the Leiden fijnschilders. He worked in Leiden, Dordrecht and The Hague, painting genre scenes, portraits and candlelit compositions.
In 1692 he sailed to England hoping to become court painter to William and Mary. He produced unusually large canvases to compete with the incumbent Sir Godfrey Kneller, but the appointment never came. He also served as court painter to the Elector Palatine in Dusseldorf. His atmospheric work inspired Sheridan Le Fanu's gothic horror story Strange Event in the Life of Schalken the Painter, later adapted by the BBC in 1979. He married Francoise van Diemen in 1679 and had seven children, though only one daughter survived to adulthood. He died in The Hague in 1706.
