A detailed 1595 engraving by Hendrick Goltzius depicting the mathematician Nicolaus Petri van Deventer surrounded by scientific instruments.
This engraving by Hendrick Goltzius depicts the Dutch mathematician and surveyor Nicolaus Petri van Deventer. Executed in 1595, the work demonstrates the technical precision for which Goltzius is known. The subject is shown in a half-length pose, dressed in the formal attire of the period, including a large ruff collar. His hands rest upon a terrestrial globe, while he holds a pair of dividers, signalling his professional engagement with cartography and geometry.
The composition incorporates various scientific instruments, such as an armillary sphere, a quadrant, and a geometric solid, which surround the sitter. These objects serve to identify Petri van Deventer as a man of learning and practical science. In the background, a small figure is visible in a landscape, using a cross-staff to measure distances, providing a narrative context for the sitter's expertise. The inscription at the top, 'L'homme propose, Et dieu dispose', reflects the philosophical outlook of the era regarding human endeavour and divine providence.
Goltzius employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the clothing, the metallic surfaces of the instruments, and the contours of the face. The lines are controlled and varied in weight, creating a sense of volume and depth within the two-dimensional medium. This print is a characteristic example of late sixteenth-century Dutch portraiture, where the sitter's identity is constructed through the inclusion of symbolic tools and professional equipment. The work remains a clear record of the intersection between art and the burgeoning scientific interests of the Dutch Golden Age.
