A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Guillaume Vallet depicting the theologian Miguel de Molinos, complete with historical inscription.
This engraving by Guillaume Vallet depicts the Spanish mystic and theologian Miguel de Molinos, a figure central to the Quietist controversy of the late seventeenth century. Vallet, a skilled French engraver who served as 'Graveur du Roy', captures the subject in profile, a format common for historical portraiture of the period. The composition is contained within an oval frame, which includes a surrounding inscription identifying Molinos as the author of Quietist heresies.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision characteristic of Vallet's work. The artist employs fine, parallel hatching to model the facial features and the folds of the subject's clerical attire. The lines are controlled and deliberate, creating a sense of volume and texture despite the monochromatic nature of the medium. Below the portrait, a cartouche provides a detailed account of Molinos's public abjuration in 1687, noting his condemnation by the Inquisition and his subsequent imprisonment.
This print functions as both a portrait and a historical document. It reflects the political and religious tensions of the era, where theological disputes were often disseminated through visual media. The inclusion of the text serves to contextualise the subject for the contemporary viewer, framing his identity through the lens of the ecclesiastical authorities of the time. The work remains a clear example of seventeenth-century French printmaking, demonstrating the intersection of portraiture and polemical documentation. The clarity of the line work and the formal arrangement of the text and image provide a window into the methods used to record and circulate the likenesses of controversial figures in early modern Europe.
