A detailed nineteenth-century lithographic portrait of the French military officer and politician Maximilien Sébastien Foy, executed by Jean Pierre Sudre.
This lithographic portrait depicts Maximilien Sébastien Foy, a prominent French military officer and politician who served during the Napoleonic Wars and the Bourbon Restoration. The work is executed with the technical precision characteristic of Jean Pierre Sudre, a master of the lithographic medium during the early nineteenth century. The portrait is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for formal likenesses of the period, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject's facial features and military attire.
Foy is shown in his uniform, complete with the medals and insignia that denote his rank and service. The artist employs subtle tonal gradations to model the face, creating a sense of volume and presence. The uniform, with its high collar and decorative buttons, is rendered with careful attention to texture and light. Below the portrait, the print includes a biographical inscription and a patriotic sentiment, which were standard features for commemorative prints produced in the years following the subject's death in 1825.
Sudre was known for his ability to translate the nuances of drawing into the lithographic stone. This print demonstrates his command of the medium, using a range of grey tones to achieve a photographic quality that was highly sought after by collectors of the era. The composition is balanced and formal, reflecting the aesthetic values of the time. The clean lines and clear focus on the subject make this an excellent example of nineteenth-century portraiture, capturing the gravity and public stature of a figure who remained a symbol of liberal opposition during the Restoration. The print serves as a record of both the individual and the graphic techniques employed by French printmakers to disseminate portraits of public figures to a wider audience.
