A refined stipple engraving of Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen of Prussia, presented in a classic oval format.
This stipple engraving depicts Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who served as the Queen of Prussia. The work captures the subject in a classic oval format, a common presentation for portraiture during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The technique of stipple engraving, which relies on small dots to create tonal variation rather than continuous lines, allows for a soft, painterly quality that mimics the appearance of a wash drawing or watercolour.
Louise is shown with her hair styled in the fashion of the period, adorned with a prominent bow. Her attire reflects the neoclassical preference for simplicity, featuring a high-waisted gown and a wrapped neckpiece. The inscription below the portrait identifies her as the reigning Queen of Prussia, a title she held until her death in 1810. The print serves as a historical record of her public image, which was carefully managed to project both grace and national identity during a period of significant political upheaval in Europe.
Heinrich Müller, working alongside the engraver Scheffner and the draughtsman Dehne, produced this image to circulate the likeness of the popular monarch. The stipple method was particularly favoured for portraits of royalty and public figures because it provided a refined, delicate finish that appealed to the tastes of the era. The composition is balanced and restrained, focusing the viewer's attention on the facial features of the Queen. This print remains a representative example of the graphic arts produced in Germany during the Napoleonic era, reflecting the intersection of portraiture, printmaking technology, and royal iconography.
